From college prep to performance coaching, our educational workshops connect students with the experts who know the path—and how to walk it. These dynamic sessions and panel discussions feature leaders in music education, including admissions officers, professional musicians, and communication coaches, all dedicated to helping young artists get to the next level.

Past topics have included College Prep for Musicians and Performance & Communication. Each is designed to give students the tools, information, and skill set they need to pursue their musical goals.

Meet The Orchestra

Music for Youth partners annually with Pequot Library to deliver Meet the Orchestra, an interactive, multidisciplinary program designed to engage students from underserved communities through the integration of music and literature.

During the 2025–26 program year, the curriculum explored themes of American identity through poetry and music, drawing on selections from the Great American Songbook. Students were introduced to historical literary materials from the Library’s archival collection, including early educational texts featuring acrostic poetry. Building on this foundation, students created their own acrostic poems using their names.

The program culminated in a live performance by a professional jazz trio, the Chris Coogan Trio which demonstrated key musical concepts and illustrated connections between poetry and music, including a musical interpretation of an acrostic structure. Selected student poems were set to music, providing participants with a unique opportunity to see their work brought to life by professional musicians.

This program promotes interdisciplinary learning, creativity, and cultural engagement, while increasing access to high-quality music for underserved youth.
